2025 Postdoctoral Fellowship - Multicultural Psychology Focus

Deadline: Applications due December 1st, 2024.

Most psychologists consider private practice at some point in their career. Whether it’s in addition to work in academia or hospitals, or it’s an intentional transition for greater flexibility - clinical work in private practice is often part of a satisfying career. However, many have little to no prior training in this context.

Our fellowship addresses a consistent problem facing most doctoral-level psychology graduates: no hands-on experience or professional mentorship in what it means to be a multiculturally responsive, thriving psychologist in group private practice. The fellowship at Manhattan Therapy Collective is a training opportunity for those considering private practice in their careers and interested in strong professional development and ethical entrepreneurship.

This position is ideal for a limited permit psychologist who:

  • Is interested in exploring clinical work in a supportive, full-fee group private practice setting

  • Is a collaborative team player who is strongly values or mission-driven

  • Is a strong clinician who is growth-oriented, proactive, and open to constructive feedback

  • Is proficient in an evidence based approach (e.g., CBT, DBT, CPT, IPT) and can integrate it as clinically indicated in a relational manner

  • Enjoys working with adults in therapy, especially driven professionals, recent graduates, parents, creatives, and first-timers in therapy

  • Enjoys working with a highly diverse adult population (e.g., BIPOC, Multiracial, LGBTQ+, ethnicity, 1st and 2nd generation folks, gender)

  • Has strong organizational skills, communication skills, and consistent professionalism

  • Demonstrates self-awareness and eagerness to reflect on their own multicultural identity, biases, areas for growth, and countertransference;

  • Is interested in discussing the impact of cultural/identity topics upon mental health and therapy (we frequently works with patients that explicitly request clinicians experienced in discussing identity, minority stress, and cross-cultural conflict in therapy)

  • Is interested in supervision from an integrative perspective that includes evidence-based approaches (e.g., CBT, DBT, ERT, ACT, IPT, etc), relational approaches, and a strong emphasis on multicultural psychology through an anti-oppressive framework

  • Is open to learning and using introductory marketing and entrepreneurial strategies

About Manhattan Therapy Collective

We are a group practice of psychologists committed to the highest standard of care, multicultural psychology, and a social justice orientation to mental health care. Our mission is to help people flourish through empowering, integrative, and effective mental health care. We provide therapy that cares for each person’s growth, healing, and humanity. Check out our website for further information on our approach and larger vision. We only serve adults 18 years of age and older. The most common concerns treated by our team are anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, relationship concerns, challenging interpersonal dynamics, academic or work stress/burnout, trauma disorders, life transitions, marginalized identity stressors, cross cultural concerns, perinatal and postpartum issues, grief and loss, and perfectionism.

We prioritize integrative and multiculturally responsive clinical practice and a professional growth mindset, believing that we have to start with ourselves. Our practice supports the professional development and emotional wellbeing of its psychologists, as clinician health is needed if we are to be useful, present, and fulfilled by our work. We are committed to best practices through continual training, peer consultation, supervision, and regular self-care. We are also committed to co-creating a healthy work culture and supporting work-life balance.

Our Postdoctoral Fellow will be supported in their development of a well-rounded professional identity, including: screening new patients to strengthen clinical judgement of an appropriate referral/your scope of practice, fine tuning an integrative theoretical orientation, managing a diverse caseload and potential waitlist, addressing imposter syndrome, practicing the setting and raising of fees with patients, managing billing independently, learning how to present online via basic marketing, understanding introductory search engine optimization (SEO) strategies, strengthening referral retention, identifying/building specialties or niche expertise, and overall confidence building in accordance with postdoc level of interest and professional goals. Regular check-in points about feedback and goals with the clinical director provided. Prior private practice experience is encouraged, but not required. Postdoctoral fellows are provided regular supervision, mentorship, administrative support, and referrals to build their caseload. Our small practice size allows postdoctoral fellows to receive undivided attention and highly individualized support for their health and success.

While we will not require our postdoctoral fellow to provide manualized treatment or adhere to a singular evidence-based theoretical orientation, we do expect interest in training in multiple EBPs and incorporating them relationally to best serve patient needs. Our patient population frequently seeks skill building and psychoeducation. We emphasize a balance between therapy promoting self-awareness and actionable change and will supervise as such. We will also emphasize growth in multicultural self-reflection, conceptualization, and practice from an anti-oppressive framework. Those interested only in psychodynamically oriented supervision or psychoanalytic work will not be a good fit for our patient population or supervisory approach. Prior private practice experience is not mandatory.
