We welcome applicants for our 2025 Doctoral Psychology Externship!

About Our Practice & Expectations:

We are a group practice of doctoral-level clinicians committed to the highest standard of care, multicultural psychology, and a social justice orientation to mental health care. Our mission is to help people flourish through integrative, relationally-driven, and evidence-based mental health care.

The externship addresses a consistent problem facing most doctoral-level psychology trainees: little to no clinical experience in a private practice setting upon graduation - despite the reality that many clinicians are interested in incorporating private practice work into their careers.

Our externship training is two-fold:

  • Extern will learn to practice integratively, meaning developing a therapeutic approach tailored to meet the unique needs of each person they work with. The most common concerns treated by our practice are anxiety, depression, relationship/interpersonal dynamics, academic or work stress/burnout, trauma/CPTSD, life transitions, identity stress (BIPOC/LGBTQ+), cross cultural concerns, perinatal and postpartum issues, grief, and perfectionism. Evidence-based approaches will be encouraged, such as CBT, DBT, IPT, ERT, and ACT, as well as psychodynamic, multicultural, and somatic psychology interventions.

  • Extern will also learn to increase mindfulness of identity factors in therapy and incorporate multiculturally responsive interventions from an anti-oppressive lens. Self-reflection on therapist identities (e.g., racial, gender, sexuality, neurodivergence, spirituality, etc) and the existence of power, privilege or marginalization in how presenting concerns manifest or how they may affect the therapeutic relationship will be encouraged.

This externship opportunity is open to students in their third year of training or above (have 2 years of prior clinical experience) in an APA-accredited training program. Exceptional second-year students may be considered, but third-years are preferred. Extern will be expected to conduct screening calls, intake assessments, and provide individual psychotherapy with a caseload of 5-7 adult patients weekly. Typical schedule would likely include 5-7 therapy sessions, 1 hour supervision, and remaining time on documentation or training.

This position is ideal for a trainee who:

  • May be looking for additional clinical experience or hours in a highly flexible, supportive setting (can work virtually and/or in person, sessions do not need to scheduled back to back, etc).

  • Enjoys working with adults in therapy, especially high achieving professionals, students, creatives, and first-timers in therapy

  • Enjoys working with a highly diverse adult population

  • Has strong organizational skills, communication skills, and consistent professionalism

  • Demonstrates self-awareness and eagerness to reflect on their own multicultural identity, biases, areas for growth, and countertransference

While we will not require our Extern to provide manualized treatment or adhere to a singular evidence-based theoretical orientation, we do expect interest in training in multiple EBPs and incorporating them relationally with other culturally-responsive interventions. We emphasize a balance between therapy promoting self-awareness and actionable change and will supervise as such. Additionally, the Extern is expected to engage in introductory marketing skills. Preference will be given to a candidate with prior trauma experience and that can offer in-person or evening availability, however this position can be virtual and flexible.
